Current advisories

Lower Waiohine Track slip

21 July 2026

There is a large slip on the Lower Waiohine Track. The only access past the slip to Totara Flats Hut now requires walking upstream on the riverbank. This shouldn’t be attempted during or after heavy rainfall or when the river flow is high. There is no longer access to pass above the slip. Check the weather forecast before you go. Trampers should take extra care and look for hazards such as rockfall when travelling this section. First published on 29 November 2024. Last reviewed on 22 July 2026.

On the way here

Holdsworth - Kaitoke Track · 2–3 days

Day one: Holdsworth – Totara Flats Hut

Time: 6 hr

The track begins at the Holdsworth car park at the end of Holdsworth Road. There is a campsite and bookable lodge near the road. From Holdsworth Lodge, cross the bridge and continue up the track in the direction of Donnelly’s Flat. Turn left at the signpost onto the track to Powell Hut and climb the Gentle Annie track towards Mountain House Shelter. This track is a well graded, well formed walkway, and offers several lookout points. Follow this track until the turnoff to Totara Flats Hut. From the turnoff onwards, the track is less well-formed, muddy in places, steep with many tree roots. Follow the Totara Creek Track along the ridge to a high point, 575 m, and continue along the track, heading down towards Totara Creek. Follow the creek on the true left to the swing bridge crossing, then continue downstream on the true right. At the Waiohine River, cross the bridge and turn left to Totara Flats Hut. Totara Flats has numerous camping sites. Campers who use hut facilities are required to pay one hut ticket.

Day two: Totara Flats Hut – Tutuwai Hut

Time: 6 hr

From Totara Flats Hut, the track continues down the Waiohine River river and across Totara flats. Before reaching a high bluff, the track swings away from the river. It climbs steeply up onto a high riverbank and then continues downstream. The track soon reaches a large slip. The only option for passing the slip is to walk downstream on the riverbank to Makaka Creek. This is only possible when the river is low; if in doubt, take the all-weather track. Cross the Makaka Creek bridge and climb up the bank to the marked junction. This is where the Cone Saddle Track separates from the Lower Waiohine Track. Turn right onto the Cone Saddle Track at the junction and climb steadily up a spur to the ridge top. From here the track sidles into Clem Creek and climbs to Cone Saddle. Descend the track to Cone Hut in the Tauwharenīkau Valley. Expect to encounter stream crossings, muddy sections and fallen trees on the Cone Saddle Track. The track can be narrow and indistinct in places, so keep a close eye on the orange markers. Allow plenty of time for this section. From Cone Hut follow the track down the Tauwharenīkau river valley. The track passes through muddy terraces and grassy flats. There are regular crossings of small side streams. Tutuwai Hut is about 1 hr walk from Cone Hut. There are grassy areas near Tutuwai Hut that are good camping sites. Campers who use hut facilities are required to pay one hut ticket

Cone Ridge Tracks

Cone Ridge Track, from Cone Saddle to Totara Flats Hut (via Cone and Cone Ridge)

From Cone Saddle, the track climbs steadily to Mount Cone, gaining around 500 m in elevation. Just before Cone there is a track junction, where the left-hand track leads to Neill Saddle and Neill Ridge. Take the right hand track to follow Cone Ridge. After the track junction, the track briefly emerges into low alpine scrub at the Cone high point. It is a welcome opportunity to rest and enjoy the view. From here, the track returns to the bush and continues along the relatively flat Cone Ridge. Partway along Cone Ridge (5.13 km from Cone Saddle), you will reach a track junction. Here you have the option to descend steeply to Neill Forks Hut (this is described below). To go to Totara Flats Hut, take the right hand track that continues straight ahead along the ridge. At the end of Cone Ridge, the track follows a long ridge down into the Tauwharenīkau Valley. The descent gets steeper as you get further down, so plan plenty of time and watch your feet carefully. The track emerges onto a river terrace not far upstream from Totara Flats Hut. Follow the track down the river, passing but not crossing a suspension bridge. The hut is a few minutes downstream from the bridge.

Totara Flats Hut to Neill Forks Hut, via Cone Ridge

Time: 4-5 hours

5.54 km Be aware that this track involves significant elevation change – you climb over 700 vertical meters to Cone Ridge, then shortly afterwards descend very steeply to Neill Forks Hut, losing over 550 vertical meters. The track is rough and unformed, so you will be climbing up and down over tree roots and slippery surfaces. While the track distance looks relatively short, all this means that the track between Totara Flats and Neill Forks is demanding and time-consuming. We recommend allowing plenty of extra time, so you can rest often, go carefully, and have time to walk the track in daylight. From Totara Flats Hut, follow the track upstream. Shortly after the hut you will pass a suspension bridge – do not cross this bridge (that track leads towards Mount Holdsworth). Instead, continue following the track up the true right of the Tauwharenīkau River. Soon the track leaves the river terrace and begins to climb a long ridge. The climb is steep at first, before gradually becoming gentler. This is a long stretch of climbing, gaining over 700 vertical metres. Finally the track flattens out as you arrive on Cone Ridge. Follow the track along Cone Ridge, until you come to a track junction. Take the right hand track to Neill Forks Hut. The track descends steeply off the ridge, dropping down into the Hector River valley. This is a demanding descent, so take it slow to avoid slipping. Shortly before the hut, the track reaches Neill Creek. It crosses the creek twice without a bridge. This creek can rise rapidly during/following rain, so assess it carefully and decide whether the creek is safe to cross. If in doubt, wait for the water level to drop or return to Totara Flats Hut. After the second Neill Creek crossing, you come to Neill Forks Hut, near the confluence of Hector River and Neill Creek. There are no water sources (this includes no streams) for the vast majority of this track, so we recommend carrying at least 2L of water per person.

Lower Waiohine Track · 4 hr and 30 min

Just before Makaka Creek (Long Flat Creek), the track reaches a junction. The Cone Saddle Track meets the Lower Waiohine Track at this junction, after descending from Cone Saddle. Continue up the valley, following the signs towards Totara Flats Hut.

Continue on the Lower Waiohine Track up the Waiohine Valley, across the grassy flats known as Totara Flats. The track re-enters the bush at the end of the flats, then arrives at Totara Flats Hut.
