About this place
Hakea is a land-based community nestled in the hills above Aotea Harbour, near Raglan, Aotearoa New Zealand. Set across around 40 acres, including approximately 20 acres of regenerating native forest, Hakea is a place where people come together to explore regenerative ways of living, learning, creating and caring for the land. For more than three decades, Hakea has been home to people interested in community, ecological restoration, self-sufficiency, permaculture and alternative ways of living. The land provides a space to put these ideas into practice — growing food, restoring ecosystems, caring for animals, building and maintaining infrastructure, sharing knowledge, raising children and developing the relationships that make community possible. Hakea is shaped by the understanding that land is something we care for and participate in, rather than something we simply possess. The community works towards living in ways that support the health of the land, the people who live here and the wider ecosystems we are part of. Regenerating forest, food gardens, natural building, renewable energy, water systems, ecological restoration and low-impact living are all part of the everyday life of the place. Community life at Hakea is collaborative and participatory. People bring their own skills, experience, creativity and capacity, while contributing to the shared life of the community. Different teams and working groups look after areas such as food production, animals, infrastructure, social culture, finances and community stewardship, creating many ways for people to take part and contribute. At its heart, Hakea is a living experiment in regenerative culture — a place where people can learn through doing, develop deeper relationships with each other and the natural world, and explore practical ways of creating a more connected and resilient future. Hakea welcomes people who are curious about community, permaculture, ecological restoration, practical skills and regenerative living, and who want to experience what becomes possible when people, land and shared purpose are brought together.
