About this place

The area around Mystery Lake has steep rocky ‘knobs’ smoothed by passing glaciers, jumbled scree and large Hall’s tōtara.

The route

Mystery Lake Track starts from Buicks Bridge to Potts Lake Track . Return the same way or continue to Lake Clearwater (4 hr, 11.8 km), another 7 km down Hakatere Potts Road. The area around Mystery Lake is fascinating, with steep roche moutonnées (rocky ‘knobs’ smoothed by passing glaciers), jumbled scree and (surprising for such a treeless area) large Hall’s tōtara.

Mountain biking

These are shared-use tracks. Follow the mountain bikers code : respect others, respect the rules, respect the track.
