About this place

For a good family challenge, walk to Speargrass Hut on an intermediate grade track.

The route

This well-graded track descends gradually from the carpark. It follows the river along the valley floor then climbs up through beautiful beech forest to Speargrass Hut – set in a clearing with mountain views. It can be very cold and in winter and there may be snow on the track.

Understand if you are ready for this tramp

Watch the NZ Mountain Safety Council’s walk-through video which takes you through how to prepare for this track. Including facilities, key decision points, hazards and typical conditions for the area.
