About this place

Enjoy great views of spectacular waterfalls and white-water rafters on the Kaituna River from a viewing platform along this short, easy walk. Kids will also enjoy searching for geocaches and spotting glow worms after dark.

The route

A well-formed bushwalk with a scenic lookout over Ōkere River and its spectacular waterfalls. There are numerous information panels along the track, describing the human and natural landscape. A wide grassy area beside the main car park provides a good site for a picnic, public toilets are provided here as well. The trout pool is a popular fishing spot, and trout are often seen swimming gently against the current. From the main lookout platform by Hinemoa's steps you can watch rafters and kayakers sweep over the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world. Note: The platform that looks out over Tutea Falls is closed. You can still enjoy views from sections of the track leading down to the cave.

Know before you go

Keep Rotorua lakes free of pest fish

Invasive species are a pest because they reduce water quality and can compete with native species and trout. You can help by reporting sightings or photographing caught specimens of koi carp (3-70 cm) or catfish (3-40 cm). Other fish of concern are rudd and gambusia. How to report your sightings .
