Getting there

We have not checked a road end or car park for this place yet, so we do not give driving directions to it. Check how to get there before you go. Some routes cross private land and need the landowner's permission.

How to get there, on doc.govt.nz

4WD road past the end of Staircase Road: 3 hr 30 min

Lake Chalice Hut: 5 hr (9 km)

From Lake Chalice Hut the track on the western end of Lake Chalice descends, passing the resurgence of the Goulter River at a group of springs. Once into the valley the track follows the true left of the river to Mid Goulter Hut

Lower Goulter Hut: 3 hr (6.8 km)

This stretch between Lower and Mid Goulter Hut is one of the few areas in the park with extensive open river flats. If the river is low it is possible, by crossing and recrossing it, to keep entirely to the open grassy banks. If the river is high take the track which follows the river up the true left.

Old Man Hut: 4 hr (10 km)

From Old Man Hut descend steeply to a stream, following it to the Goulter River. Across the river travel along the true left to Mid Goulter Hut.
