WOOF at Jack's Hut

Hosted by Ruamāhanga Farm Foundation

Work exchange / WWOOFingLong stays welcome

About this space

We have accommodation for up to two people at a time. In return for your help we will provide you with bed and board and the opportunity to have a behind the scenes look at how RFF runs. Accommodation is in our newly restored and self-contained 'Jack's Hut'. Over the last year Jack's Hut has been restored into a warm and nourishing place for travellers. Jack's Hut was built around 1930 of native timbers. It has a large bathroom with a clawfoot bath, a generously sized bedroom with a teeny pot belly stove to cook on and a verandah perfectly positioned to avoid the wind and catch the sun. Our first Jack's hut occupants, aka WOOFers, have each stayed for more than a month and have shown not only a willingness towards the physical labour involved in helping new plantings survive but they have also brought their own creative voice which is shaping what we are doing. Helpers plant native trees and wetland grasses, release young trees, clear paths and work in the vegetable garden. Some help with our schools programme, workshops and story walks too, so bring your own skills and ideas. Send us a request and tell us why you are interested in coming to join us and what your background is, including any practical skills.

Four hours a day, generally Sunday through to Thursday, and sometimes Monday to Friday. Dinner is provided five days a week, and we encourage helpers to share some of the cooking. On the other days we provide food for you to cook for yourselves in Jack's Hut. We also provide food for breakfasts and lunches for you to prepare yourselves: veg from the garden or the veg box, and we go to the supermarket with you for what else is needed.

Things to know

We take helpers year round. We can host up to two people at a time in Jack's Hut, so solo helpers are welcome too. There is one bedroom, so two people need to be a couple or friends. A couple could come with a child, but you would need to provide the extra food. No dogs, as this is a working farm. Ideally two weeks is the shortest stay and six weeks the longest, but we can make exceptions. We send arrival details when we confirm your stay.

This host welcomes longer stays. Here are the details:
