A place to land, contribute and connect in Ōtautahi

Hosted by Josh

Prefers: Work exchange · Open to: Koha, $15/night

About this space

The space is a beautiful 2,400m² property on the edge of Christchurch, surrounded by established trees and bordering the red zone. Our longer-term intention is to slowly grow this into a small community hub for people living and travelling on the road. A place where people can land for a while, meet others, share meals and stories, make things, play music, tend gardens, lend practical skills, or simply contribute whatever they naturally have to offer. We’re interested in a culture of reciprocity rather than everything being transactional. Something closer to koha or a gift economy, where people give from what they have in abundance and receive from what others have to share. Right now, much of the work is preparing the land so it can receive people. We’re clearing and tidying areas, establishing gardens, renovating a small cabin and generally bringing the place back to life. There’s plenty of room for vans, motorhomes and larger vehicles up to around 7 metres, along with access to a bathroom, laundry and sauna. Despite feeling green and tucked away, we’re only around five minutes from central Christchurch, with shops and everyday amenities nearby. Staying here For now, stays are limited to up to seven days. A week feels long enough to settle in, get to know one another and contribute meaningfully, while keeping the space moving and available for other travellers passing through. If something longer organically emerges, we can speak into that as it arises. If this resonates with you, you’re welcome to send us a request and tell us a little about yourself, how you’re travelling, and what you might enjoy bringing to the mix.

Koha note

For us, koha is about reciprocity rather than transaction. A gift freely given. We offer what we have in abundance, and invite you to do the same. That might be time, practical skills, food, creativity, music, care for the land, knowledge, or something we haven't imagined. There doesn't need to be a neat equation where one thing is exchanged for another. The intention is simply that we each contribute to the place and to one another in ways that feel genuine. Over time, we hope to grow a culture here where giving and receiving move naturally in both directions, and where everyone leaves a little richer for having crossed paths.

Work exchange

Rather than setting a rigid formula, we’d like to agree together on a contribution that feels fair for the time you’re here. That might be gardening, land care, building or repair work, cleaning, arborist skills, creativity, cooking, music, helping create shared spaces, or something else you’re good at. Current practical priorities include: - tree and arborist work - clearing and tidying the land - establishing gardens - deep cleaning the bathroom, laundry and sauna - renovating a a room and a small cabin, including carpet removal, painting and repairs Tell us what you enjoy and what you’re good at.
