Getting there
55 km north of Coromandel.
From Coromandel take the Colville Road for 22 km until the Whangaahei Junction, then turn right and follow the Port Charles Rd to Sandy Bay, and then the Stony Bay Rd until the end. This is a no exit road.
Access: Unsealed, narrow and winding road from Colville.
The access road is remote, narrow, unsealed and has tight corners. There is limited space to pass other vehicles travelling in the opposition direction. Some vehicles you encounter could be towing boats or large trailers. You will need to be prepared to reverse sections of the road depending on where you meet oncoming traffic.
Be prepared for larger traffic numbers over the summer period. Expect the unsealed road surface to become slippery during long periods of rain. Take extra care and drive at low speeds while navigating the narrow road.
